Supplies Needed:
Tulip Fabric Dye Pod in Petunia
100% Cotton socks
Football chenille patches
Beads
Elastic bracelet string
Needle
Sewing scissors
Rhinestones
Rhinestone picker tool
Washing machine + detergent
Salt
Cardboard or wax paper
Step 1: Prepare your football socks
Before you start dyeing your football socks, prewash the fabric to remove sizing and do not use fabric softener. Check the material of your socks before dyeing— Tulip Fabric Dye Pods work best on best on 100% cotton, linen, ramie and rayon; wool, silk and polyester/cotton mixes will dye to lighter shades. One Fabric Dye Pod can dye up to 21 ounces of dry fabric to the full shade, so you can create enough pink football socks for the whole team!
Step 2: Add dye pod to washing machine
Place the damp, prewashed cotton football socks into the washing machine drum. Remove the sleeve and lid from the dye pod, then place the dye pod into the drum in an upright position. Do not pour the dye powder out. Sprinkle 1.5 cups salt evenly around the fabric. Select the 2-hour wash cycle option with hot water or bacteria/mite removal setting. When the cycle is complete, remove the empty pod from the machine. Add washing detergent and run another cycle (normal wash cycle, room temperature water).
Step 3: Dry the pink football socks
Remove the pink football socks from the washing machine, add detergent, and run an empty cycle to remove any remaining traces of dye from your machine. Lay the socks flat to air dry completely or add to the dryer on low heat. Once your football socks are dry, they are ready to decorate!
Step 4: Apply football patches to socks
Lay the pink football socks flat on your work surface and insert cardboard or wax paper between layers. This will prevent the fabric glue from seeping through to the other side. Apply a thin layer of Aleene’s Fabric Fusion to the back of your football chenille patch, then press into place on the ankle of the sock. Do not use an iron-on patch with Fabric Fusion.
Step 5: Apply rhinestones to pink football socks
Next, decorate your pink football socks with rhinestones! Apply a small amount of Aleene’s Rhinestone Adhesive to the back of each rhinestone, then press into place to embellish your football socks.
Step 6: Add beads to pink football socks
Finish your football socks with a friendship bracelet-inspired embellishment! Thread the elastic bracelet string through a needle, knot one end, then push the needle through the outer layer of fabric. Add beads to the string for your desired design. For this project, Miranda Miele is adding beads to spell out “FOOTBALL ERA” on her pink football socks! Once you’ve finished adding beads, use the needle to pull the string through to the other side of the fabric, clip the string, and tie a knot to secure into place.
Step 7: Let dry and enjoy!
Allow the glue to dry completely, then your pink football socks are ready to wear. These colorful accessories are the perfect way to elevate your game day look!
