Supplies Needed:
Tulip ColorShot Fabric Spray Paint Festival 5 Pack
Aleene’s Repositionable Tacky Spray
Throw blanket
Cardstock squares
Disposable gloves
Drop cloth or protective surface cover
Step 1 Prepare your blanket
Make sure your blanket is clean, dry, and free of lint before you start on this checkered throw blanket DIY. Lay the blanket flat on a protected work surface in a well-ventilated area. We’re using a linen throw blanket, but Tulip ColorShot Fabric Spray Paint works on most natural and synthetic fiber fabrics!
Step 2 Apply Repositionable Tacky Spray
To create a checkered pattern on this custom blanket, you’ll need to create a stencil with cardstock squares. Start by spraying the back of a cardstock square with a light, even coat of Aleene’s Repositionable Tacky Spray. Be sure to wear gloves while working with the Tacky Spray!
Step 3 Press cardstock squares onto blanket
Place the cardstock square onto the corner of your throw blanket and press firmly to adhere. Since the Tacky Spray is repositionable, you can remove and readjust the placement as needed.
Step 4 Repeat
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your custom blanket is covered in cardstock squares in a checkered pattern.
Step 5 Apply fabric spray paint
It’s time to add color to your checkered throw blanket! Shake the can of fabric spray paint well for at least 1 minute to mix the pigment. Hold the can 6-8 inches from fabric and spray with smooth, even strokes. Shake often during use. Apply one light coat at a time, waiting 5 minutes between coats. Add additional coats for desired coverage and intensity. For this custom blanket DIY, we used the Festival 5-Pack for a multicolored gradient!
Step 6 Remove cardstock squares
Once you’ve finished painting your checkered throw blanket, carefully remove each cardstock square from the surface and allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 7 Reveal!
Once the fabric spray paint has dried completely, your checkered throw blanket is ready to keep you warm all winter long! This custom painted blanket can be washed with mild detergent on gentle cycle after 72 hours.
