DIY Papel Picado T-shirt
Whether you want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a craft project or you're just in the mood to wear something with colorful personality, this DIY Papel Picado T-shirt is a super fun idea! Handmade Charlotte shows you how easy it is to use Tulip Fabric Paint Markers and paper cutouts to create a vibrant T-shirt you'll want to keep wearing well beyond May. It makes a great project for your little ones too, so consider throwing a creative fiesta for the whole fam!
What you need:
- White cotton T-shirt
- Scrap paper
- Scissors
- Cardboard
Make sure your T-shirt has been washed and dried (without fabric softener) before starting your project. Place a sheet of cardboard inside of it to prevent any marker inks from potentially soaking through to the backside. Cut scrap papers into rectangles, each about the size of a playing card. Trim the bottom edge of each rectangle into a simple scalloped or zig-zag pattern and lay them out on your shirt in slightly curved rows as if they are hanging from a garland.
Choose your Fabric Paint Marker colors and prep the markers according to the package instructions. Trace around the paper shapes on your shirt, changing marker colors for each one.
Once you have each paper traced, remove the papers and fill in each outline with a different design. Tip: If you look up Papel Picados online, you'll be able to find all kinds of inspiring designs. Have fun and get creative!
Once you're happy with your Papel Picado designs, use a black Fabric Paint Marker to connect each row of designs with a string line. Let your shirt dry completely before wearing!
Now you have a colorful T-shirt to wear for Cinco de Mayo - and every other day of the year!
