Step 1: Prepare materials

Step 1: Prepare materials

Before you get started on this colored denim DIY, gather the materials needed for this project. Prepare your tie dye solutions according to package instructions and prewash your denim jacket.

Scrunch fabric for crumple technique

Step 2: Scrunch fabric

Lay your damp denim jacket flat onto a protected work area and scrunch as desired for the crumple technique. You can make the fabric loosely crumpled or squish it all together for tighter, more defined patterns on your colored denim. Secure the crumpled fabric with rubber bands if desired.

Apply dyes to create colored denim

Step 3: Apply dyes

Apply your prepared tie-dye solutions to the denim as desired to create uniquely colored denim! Use gloved hands to work the dyes into the denim, checking to ensure the dyes have penetrated the folds. Flip your scrunched fabric over and apply dye to the backside as well.

Wrap colored denim with plastic

Step 4: Wrap and let set

Wrap the colored denim with plastic or place into a sealed plastic bag. Allow the dyes to set for 6-8 hours.
