DIY Whimsy Utility Jacket with Fabric Paint & Markers
Transforming durable, utilitarian canvas jackets with fabric paint and custom illustrations is a massive streetwear trend. Creators are upcycling thrifted or stained canvas jackets into one-of-a-kind art pieces by sketching and hand-painting vibrant designs right onto the rugged fabric.
What is the Whimsy Trend?
From dopamine-spiking decor to more childlike DIYs, bright clothes, adults are romanticizing the smallest aspects of their lives and fully running with a lighthearted outlook.
Supplies:
Tulip Soft Fabric Paint Rainbow 10 Pack
Tulip Fine-Tip Fabric Markers Rainbow 20 Pack
Light colored canvas jacket
Paintbrush
Water cup
Paint palette or paper plate

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
1. PREPARE JACKET FOR DESIGNING
Prewash and dry jacket. Lay perfectly flat. Pour small amounts of Tulip Soft Fabric Paint onto a palette or paper plate.
2. APPLY FABRIC PAINT
Use a paintbrush to add colorful artwork across the front, sleeves, pockets, and back of the jacket, building up larger shapes first. Rinse the brush between colors and let each painted area dry before layering more color.
3. PAINT THE BACK DESIGN
Turn the jacket over once the front is dry and paint the main statement design on the back panel. Add bold lettering, simple icons, flowers, stars, hearts, or other hand-painted details inspired by the finished jacket image. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on.
4. ADD FABRIC MARKER DETAILS
Use Tulip Fine-Tip Fabric Markers to outline painted shapes, add small doodles, write words or phrases, and sharpen any details. Let the marker ink dry fully, then check the jacket for any final touch-ups before wearing or styling.
