DIY Marble Tie-Dye Picnic Blanket

Tie-Dye Indoor Picnic Blanket

Chilly winter weather is still in effect, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun while stuck inside! Change things up and feed your creative appetite with an indoor picnic complete with a marble tie-dye picnic blanket. Handmade Charlotte will show you how to use Tulip Fabric Dyes to tie dye a blanket for dining in cozy, colorful style this winter.

What you need:

Tulip Fabric Dye – color of choice

- White 100% cotton sheet or blanket

- Large plastic tub

- String

- Salt

- Measuring spoons/cups

- Mixing spoon

- Plastic or rubber gloves

- Disposable plastic table cover

Fold and secure damp fabric

To get started on your indoor picnic blanket, first wash it and leave it damp for dyeing. (Or you can re-dampen it and wring out the excess water if you aren’t able to get straight to dyeing after washing it.) Make sure to cover your work surface with a plastic table cover, then place your damp fabric on top. For this project, Handmade Charlotte used the Crumple Tie-Dye Technique, but you can use any tie-dye technique you like! After folding your fabric into whatever tie-dye pattern you like, secure it with string to hold in place.

Mix dye

Next, follow the instructions on your Tulip Fabric Dye packet to mix up the dye, hot water and salt in a large plastic tub.

Submerge fabric in dye

Submerge your bound fabric in the dye bath, flipping it over every 10 minutes or so for about an hour. Tip from Handmade Charlotte: If you don’t feel like flipping the fabric over at regular intervals, you can instead place a heavy waterproof item on top of it to keep it completely submerged in the dye while the dye processes.

Rinse and launder according to instructions

After the dye has set, remove the string from the blanket and rinse under cool water until the runoff is clear. Wash separately and dry according to instructions. If you want to add extra color to your indoor picnic blanket like Handmade Charlotte, you can repeat the dye process with another dye color over the dye pattern you just created. It’s totally up to you! (Charlotte went with Dusty Rose first, and Taupe over the top of it!)

Tie-Dye Indoor Picnic Blanket

Once your new tie-dye blanket is dry, you’re ready to throw a fabulous indoor picnic for your fam! The great thing about an indoor picnic during wintertime is you can stay warm & cozy while enjoying a typically outdoor activity that’s full of your favorite foods, good conversation and quality time with loved ones!
