Supplies Needed:
100% Cotton maxi skirt
Protective gloves
Protective surface cover
Plastic wrap or sealable plastic bag
Step 1: Prepare your cotton maxi skirt
Before you start dyeing your cotton maxi skirt, prewash the fabric and cover your work area with a protective surface cover. Leave the fabric damp for the dip dye technique. Remember to wear gloves when working with Tulip One-Step Dyes.
Step 2: Mix dye bath in a separate container
Pour water into a container large enough to dip dye your cotton maxi skirt, add dye powders, and stir until dissolved. For this project, we are mixing brown and black One-Step Dyes to create a custom purple-gray color. (Note: Mixing brown and black dyes at full strength won’t create a true purple, but when diluted with extra water it creates a unique purple-gray shade.) Use one bottle’s worth of water per bottle of dye powder for saturated, full-strength color, or add more water as desired to create softer pastel shades.
Step 3: Dip, wrap, and let set
Carefully dip the end of your cotton maxi skirt into the dye bath. The dye will diffuse upward into the damp fabric, creating a subtle ombré effect. Once you’re finished applying dye, wrap the dyed cotton maxi skirt in plastic and allow to set for 6-8 hours.
Step 4: Rinse, wash, dry, and reveal!
Rinse the dyed cotton maxi skirt in cool water, then wash with a small amount of detergent and dry. Once your cotton maxi skirt has been laundered, it is ready to wear. This versatile piece is a bold way to add custom color to any outfit!
