Supplies Needed:
Tulip Tempera Paint Pouches
Canvas or poster board
Squeegee or scrape painting tool
Painter’s tape
Sponge
Paper plate
Protective surface cover
Prepare Your Workstation
Before you try out these kid-friendly tempera paint techniques, cover your workstation with a protective surface cover for easy cleanup— little ones can get pretty messy when they’re having fun playing with paint! Shake the tempera paint pouches well and twist the cap to remove.
Tempera Paint Technique #1 Scrape Painting
Step 1 Squeeze paint onto canvas
For this first tempera paint technique, squeeze the paint pouches directly onto the top section of your canvas or poster board. You’ll only need a small amount of each color for super vibrant results! For this project, Craft Box Girls applied the paint in a classic rainbow palette.
Step 2 Scrape the paint
Use a squeegee to scrape the tempera paint across the canvas. No squeegee? No problem! You can use a variety of tools, such as a bench scraper, gift card, or a piece of cardboard, to scrape the paint. This kid-friendly paint technique is that simple!
Tempera Paint Technique #2 Finger Paint + Scrape Painting
Step 1 Squeeze paint onto canvas
This next tempera paint technique is a more hands-on version of the last! To get started, squeeze your desired colors of tempera paint directly onto the canvas along the top and on one side. Craft Box Girls used a fun combination of bright and pastel shades for this tempera paint.
Step 2 Spread and swirl the paint
Next, use your fingers to spread and swirl the tempera paint across the canvas. This easy tempera paint technique allows your little ones to explore how colors can be mixed to create unique new shades and marbled patterns!
Step 3 Scrape the paint
Once you’re satisfied with the amount of swirl, use your squeegee to scrape the tempera paint across the canvas and reveal your marbled scrape art designs!
Tempera Paint Technique #3 Sponge Painting with Tape Resist
Step 1 Apply tape resist
This final tempera paint technique combines tape resist art with sponge painting! Apply painter’s tape to the canvas as desired— you can personalize your art with your name, or play around with the tape to create abstract geometric designs!
Step 2 Sponge on the paint
Squeeze some tempera paint onto a paper plate for easy access. Dip a sponge in your desired color, then lightly dab onto the canvas to apply the paint. Try using a variety of sponges with this paint technique to experiment with different textures!
Step 3 Remove the tape
Carefully remove the painter’s tape from your tempera paint art and reveal your resist designs!
