Step 1: Prepare the materials

Prewash and dry your white, 100% cotton T-shirt without fabric softener. For this color changing butterfly shirt, Ally Blaire is using the Lilac to Periwinkle Color Change Dye as the base color! Shake the bottle of Color Change Dye well. Pour the entire bottle of dye plus 3/4 cup warm water into a container large enough to fit your color changing project.

Step 2: Submerge T-shirt in dye bath

Always wear gloves when working with dye! Submerge the fabric in the dye bath and ensure the entire T-shirt is saturated with color changing dye. Gently wring out excess dye— fabric should be wet, but not dripping.

Step 3: Allow dyed fabric to dry, then launder

Hang the color changing T-shirt to dry and smooth out any wrinkles. Do not dry in sunlight. Ensure your color changing shirt is completely dry before washing. Wash in cool water on gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent. Air dry flat or tumble dry low.

Step 4: Paint the butterfly with Color Change Paint

Place your butterfly stencil onto the color changing shirt in your desired position. For this project, Ally Blair is using Orange to Red Color Change Paint for the butterfly! Apply 1-2 light coats of paint as desired, then carefully remove the stencil. At this point you can personalize your color changing butterfly shirt with additional hand-painted details— just remember to clean your paintbrush with water when switching between colors.

Step 5: Activate color change

Allow the paint to dry completely, approximately 4 hours. Once fully dry, your color changing butterfly shirt is ready to wear! Take your finished project into sunlight and enjoy the colorful transformation!
